Stranger Than Fiction is a terrific, whimsical, surprisingly romantic story that delves into the mind of a novelist and the soul of her up-to-the-minute books main character. In that location are many things to admire about this charming movie, just perhaps the biggest surprise surrounding it is the involvement of a perfectly subdued Will Ferrell. It may reasoned pretentious to say so, but this is his Truman Show up. And in fact, Ferrells work in Stranger Than Fiction is even stronger than Jim Carreys in Peter Weirs glimpse into reality TV culture.
In Stranger Than Fiction, Volition Ferrell is the misfortunate Harold Rick, a lone IRS valet whose life is stuck in a "by the numbers" rut. Peerless morning, he wakes up to go about his daily procedure when he is somewhat startled by a unusual voice he believes to be emanating from his tooth brush. At first base, he shrugs the voice off simply soon, it becomes besides much to ignore. What does the voice say? Well, it appears to be providing a sort of narration for Cricks dull, uneventful life, just it does so with the utmost precision. Disquieted by the voice, Crick sets out to incur help. This little journey leads him to an eccentric literary scholar (played by a hilarious Dustin Hoffman).
Then, the film switches gears and introduces us to "the voice". It turns out "the voice" belongs to Karenic Effiel (played by a winning Emma Thompson), a celebrated novelist whom, patch suffering from a life-threatening case of writers block, is urgently trying to finish her latest novel. What she doesnt realise is that her latest character conception isnt a character creation at all. Its a real man by the name of Harold Crick.
By way of some bizarre, unexplained cosmic anomaly, Crick is able to sense Effiels presence (by means of the aforementioned narration). In fear that Effiel mightiness do something inadvertently drastic (to his "character"), he sets out to find her and prove that he is in fact a real man and not some capricious figment to be manipulated at a whim.
Amongst all this chaos, Francis Henry Compton Crick finds time for a little romanticism when he falls for baker Ana Pascal (a wonderful Maggie Gyllenhaal.) when he is assigned the daunting task of auditing the abrasive, but finally sweet-natured womans bakery.
Stranger Than Fiction will, no doubt, draw comparisons to Adaptation with its literary themes and its fascinating exploration into writers block, but whereas Charlie Kaufmans innovative screenplay for that flick was hellbent on swimming in a sea of unrelenting eccentricities (thats not a stab –I loved Adjustment), this motion picture is definitely more accessible. This isnt to say that this picture isnt eccentric – it sure as shooting is, merely ultimately, Unknown Than Fiction will nearly likely take an easier time playing to the masses because its lighter and sweeter in tone.
Will Ferrell is really terrific hither as the lonely Internal Revenue Service man. For those of you world Health Organization cant warm up to his loveable man-child schtick (personally, Im a fan), this may prove to be right up your alley. As Jim Carrey did in The President Truman Show and Adam Sandler did in Punch Drunk Love, Ferrell is able to walk that pipeline between comedy and drama effortlessly. Patch he is extremely risible in Stranger Than Fabrication, its a subtle, low key kind of rum. By the end of the video, youll level buy into the notion that Ferrell could attract someone as hot as Maggie Gyllenhaal. Watch for a moving little vista in which Crick wins over his lady fair with a serenade on acoustic guitar. Its but sweet and charming.
While were on the topic of Maggie Gyllenhaal, what a tremendous year shes had. With diverse (and effective) turns in Public Trade Center, Monster House, and Sherrybaby, Gyllenhaal caps off a banner 2006 with this lovely, surprisingly complex performance. Seriously, if you havent fallen for Maggie Gyllenhaal already, you will after seeing her in this.
Emma Homer A. Thompson is wild as the neurotic Karen Effiel. While at a glance, Stranger Than Fable appears to be a story about Harold Wrick, its exactly as much about Karen. As Francis Henry Compton Crick goes through a sort of sprightliness altering metamorphosis, so does Effiel. In a sense, these two characters help each other grow and thats the focal head of the movie.
Dustin Hoffman is a riot as literary Professor Jules Hilbert, a scholar world Health Organization attempts to help Kink with his bizarre set of circumstances. His dry line saving proves a perfect match for Ferrells drollery. The two diddle off each other attractively. And in fact, their final scene together in this film is sublime. Watch as Hilbert tries to carry Crick to succumb to the unthinkable. Its a priceless scene managing to be both devastating and hilarious at the same time.
Rounding out a first pace cast are Queen Latifah who, I must confess, feels a little underwritten as a professional brought in to help suffer Effiel back on track with her writing, and a nigh missing in action Tom turkey Hulce (Amadeus, Parenthood) as a bats doctor world Health Organization tries to help Crick with his unusual shape. What happened to this guy? Hes been kaput far to a fault long. While he appears in a mere bit part here, it was great to see him in a movie once again.
Director Marc Forster has emerged as an fantastically diverse film maker. Its hard to believe that the same director was responsible for Monsters Ball, Finding Neverland, and now, Stranger Than Fiction. Forster doesnt look to have a discrete style, merely he is an expert storyteller. This is an extremely imaginative piece of work that remains grounded in reality even though at its heart, it plays as fantasy.
The screenplay by Zach Helm is witty and magical. Its besides uber-literary in its approach. It is, after all, about a writer and her character. Yes, Stranger Than Fabrication tends to be gimmicky but the film as a unscathed works - right down pat to the ending (dont worry – I wont spoil anything). Ive e’er maintained that Im cool with a sad closing or a happy ending just as long as its the fair (and appropriate) ending for the story. Case in gunpoint, look at a movie like The Shawshank Salvation. That icon of Daniel Morgan Freeman and Tim Jerome Robbins embracing on a beach is virginal magic and absolutely perfect. Or how about the nauseating last reel of Seven in which…I cant even bring myself to go into it. Its only too upsetting. Still, that was the right ending for that movie. If anything else would get been in that box, it would have destroyed the tone of the picture. On the riffle side of the strike, look at a film like Give it Fore. What becomes of Alex Haley Joel Osment at the end of that film is a complete betrayal of what that movie stands for, and whats more, it simply plays as strained, sappy manipulation. Stranger Than Fiction is interesting because its ending is actually acknowledged. It has a distinct role. Its an organic part of the plot and is important because its a further representation of character maturation.
I rattling adore this movie. Its warm, light and fabulously endearing. What is more, it finds a sensory faculty of hope in a cynical humankind. From the performances, to the way, to the writing, to Brit Daniels (front adult male for the amazing indie rock striation Spoon) catchy score and tunes, Stranger Than Fiction won me over from start to finish. Expect to see this gem on my best of list at the goal of the year.
